The Court of Arbitration for Sport yesterday made the landmark ruling that allows all clubs to block their players from participating in the Olympic Games.
As such, the Red Devils - who, in order to avoid any conflict, allowed Anderson to participate in Beijing - would be able to bring the 20-year-old back from China for the start of the English season.
Given that both Owen Hargreaves (knee) and Michael Carrick (virus) are serious doubts for the Community Shield clash against Portmsouth, it would be far from unreasonable if Sir Alex Ferguson ordered his Brazilian midfielder to return to Old Trafford immediately.
But it is believed the United boss will allow the former Porto man to represent the Selecao, who are heavily backed to claim their first Olympic gold.
It remains to be seen how other Premier League clubs will react to the CAS's decision.
