SINGAPORE : There are currently no plans to set up Electronic Road Pricing gantries in the underground portion of the Central Expressway, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Teo Ser Luck in Parliament on Wednesday.
This is because it does not pose as much of a safety risk as the nine-kilometre-long Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE).
But if the safety situation changes or travel speeds fall below the threshold level of 45 kilometres per hour, gantries will be installed and activated.
Mr Teo was responding to questions from MPs on whether gantries would be built on other expressways in anticipation of slower traffic flows.
He explained that as three-quarters of the nine-kilometre KPE is underground, the impact of an incident there would "multiply many fold" if traffic is congested.
So authorities are making the upfront investment of some S$24 million to build the 16 gantries first, even though not all of them will be activated when the KPE opens in September.
Mr Teo said: "The rationale is unique to the KPE in view of the safety concerns and is not applied to arterial roads or other expressways on the surface.
"The 16 gantries... (are) on the entries and exits... So based on the distance and where there are exits, we place the installation of the gantries accordingly..."

I didn't know that having ERP can slow down vehicles leh. And even if there will be congestions, all vehicles will be travelling at a very slow speed. the chances of having an accident will be very very low.
I never know that our government is so "concerned" for our safety leh! Wah... so damn proud and grateful of them!
Ha... if safety was a concern on KPE, they should not have built it. Want us to pay and get killed? Damn PAP!

Regarding the multiple ERP gantries in the KPE(think 16?), i can finally understand Hitler's woes on this when he goes to town

Everyone can see through the PAP lies aleady
and they still can sit there and pat themselves on their
backs? Shameless bunch of cowards.Anonymous said : I read that in the papers yesterday too and nearly fell off my seat.
If the KPE is so dangeorus then who approved the design? Have the ministers become so callused to our financial problems now that they are going to throw ERP at everything first, then think of an excuse after that? SAFETY???
What's the next excuse? ERP to replace a traffic light cause the bulb blew and it'll cost LTA $0.40 to replace so instead ERP is used there as a cost saving measure?
Anonymous said : "16 Gantries on KPE for safety"
For safety? They can't think of speed strips, better lighting, etc?
What other excuses are they going to come up with to implement ERP gantries? It's already started now, every road from here on is going to come with pre-fixed gantries before they even gauge if it's "needed".
The damn PAP will abuse any system they slip in place.
Novaflux and the rest of you who buy every line given by the PAP better wake up and realize that, yes there are problems but a government worth it's salt will not use increased taxes, direct or indirect, as the immediate "solution" to "every issue.
